Ghanaian media personality and television producer, Lily Mohammed, has raised concerns over the decision by the government to issue a Ghanaian passport to American streamer and YouTuber IShowSpeed, arguing that the move comes at a time when many Ghanaian citizens are still struggling to access basic passport services.

The issue follows an announcement by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who disclosed on Tuesday, January 27, that the passport was issued after discussions established IShowSpeed’s connection to Ghana. The Minister explained that the decision reflects Ghana’s openness to embracing members of the global African family who positively project the country internationally.

Reacting to the announcement on her show on GHOne TV, Lily Mohammed acknowledged that IShowSpeed’s visit helped draw global attention to Ghana but questioned the justification for granting him a Ghanaian passport when citizens are still facing difficulties obtaining one.

According to Lily, the process of acquiring a Ghanaian passport remains a major challenge for many Ghanaians, despite their legal right to citizenship documentation.

“Meanwhile, true Ghanaians are queuing for passports. Ghanaian citizens born in Ghana, who have the right to citizenship, are still queuing for passports,” she stated.

She further lamented that many citizens continue to struggle to access what she described as a “common passport,” while same passport appear to be easily issued to visitors.

“Ghanaians are still struggling to access a common passport,” she emphasized .

Lily argued that while visitors may help promote Ghana globally, this should not override the needs and frustrations of citizens who face delays, long queues, and administrative challenges at passport offices.

She questioned the criteria used in granting the passport, stressing that respect and value must be placed on Ghanaian citizenship and national documents.

“It’s time we put some respect and value on our Ghanaian passport and on the country,” she said.

Despite her criticism, Lily clarified that she has no issue with IShowSpeed personally or with his decision to visit Ghana. She commended his bravery and adventurous spirit, noting that Ghana remains a welcoming destination for tourists and creatives.

However, she maintained that issuing a Ghanaian passport under such circumstances sends the wrong message, especially to citizens who continue to struggle for access to basic state services.
