The High Court of Lagos State, Ikeja, presided over by Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo, has sentenced a man, Adeola Agbonrin, to 21 years imprisonment for manslaughter.

Justice Lawal-Akapo arrived at the verdict following the guilty plea of Agbonrin to the one-count charge brought against him by the Lagos State Government (LASG).

It would be recalled that the jailed Agbonrin was initially charged with the murder of one Matha Farinmade before applying for a plea bargain.

Specifically, the convict was first arraigned on January 31, 2013, before the same court. He was thereafter re-arraigned on an information contained in a charge designated ID/99C/15, dated July 3, 2024, wherein he was alleged of the manslaughter of Farinmade.

In addressing the court, counsel for the LASG, Babajide Martins insisted that Agbonrin committed the offence on January 7, 2012 at No. 32, Mojalate Street, Ilupeju, Lagos.

The offence, according to the LASG, is contrary to Section 225 of the Criminal Law, CH. C. 17, Vol.3, Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

Before the verdict of the court, Martins had informed the court of the existence of a plea bargain agreement between the parties, adding that both parties have agreed that the defendant will serve a term of 21 years from the date of remand.

In his judgment, Justice Lawal-Akapo held that, “I am satisfied that the defendant understands the charge and the facts presented.

“I am also satisfied that he entered into the plea bargain agreement freely without being influenced.

“You Adeola Agbonrin is hereby sentenced to twenty-one (21) years imprisonment commencing from 9th February 2012.”
