French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the country this Thursday in a televised speech, reaffirming his commitment to the presidential mandate that extends until 2027, despite the political crisis his Government is going through. Macron, whose Executive fell after a motion of censure promoted by the opposition, has called for national unity and pointed to the “extreme left and extreme right” as responsible for the current situation.

“I will fulfill my mandate until the end”

In his speech, which lasted about ten minutes, Macron made it clear that he is not contemplating resignation, despite critical voices urging him to do so. “The mandate that you have given me is five years, and I will fulfill it until the end,” he emphasizes, making it clear that his intention is to remain at the head of the country and lead in the midst of political turmoil.

The president has also announced that in the coming days he will appoint a new prime minister to rebuild the government leadership after the motion of no confidence in Barnier that brought down the Executive. However, he has not offered names or specific details.

Unity versus division

Macron has taken the opportunity to call for unity, appealing to collective responsibility to “work for France and forge new commitments.” In a critical tone, he has attacked what he describes as the “cynicism” of the extreme left and extreme right sectors, accusing them of putting their political interests before the needs of the country.

The president has also defended his decision to call early legislative elections last summer, a move that resulted in a fragmented Parliament, with no clear majority for any political force. This situation has complicated governability, evidencing the difficulties in reaching consensus in an increasingly polarized political scenario.

Macron’s speech marks the beginning of a new stage in his mandate, in which he must rebuild alliances and face a complex political landscape. With the appointment of a new prime minister on the horizon, the president will seek to regain control and demonstrate that his leadership remains relevant.
