Meta has introduced a new tax policy that will significantly affect Kenyan content creators who earn through its platforms. In a notice released on Thursday, November 20, the tech giant informed creators that their earnings will now be subjected to a 5% withholding tax, which Meta will remit directly to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA).

“Starting 1 Jan 2025, Kenya Tax law requires all businesses to deduct and remit taxes to the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) for any payments made to creators located in Kenya.”

According to the notice, Meta will automatically deduct the 5% withholding tax from all creator payouts, and the deduction will be clearly reflected in the remittance advice issued to each creator.

“As a result, Meta will deduct 5% withholding tax from all payments made to you; and the same would also be reflected in the remittance advice issued to you by Meta,” the notice read.

Meta added that creators should expect the new tax deduction system to take effect starting December 2025. After this date, creators will receive only the net income remaining once Meta applies the legally required deductions.

“Beginning December 2025, all payments made will be subject to 5% creator withholding tax (in addition to any other withholding taxes applicable) and the net amount after tax will be paid to you,” the notice added.

To ensure transparency, Meta assured creators that they will be able to track their withheld taxes through official documentation provided by the company, as well as through the designated government portal.

“This amount deducted will also be reflected in the remittance advice issued to you. You will be receiving the Tax deduction certificate through the government portal,” the notice further read.
