Kofi Kapito slams DSTV pricing committee snub

Executive Director of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Kofi Kapito, has expressed disappointment over the exclusion of consumer representatives from the newly formed committee tasked with reviewing DSTV subscription fees in Ghana.

The committee established by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technologies, and Innovation, Sam Nartey George, officially begins its work today, Monday, September 8, 2025.

Chaired by the Minister, the committee is charged with evaluating both the justification for current DSTV pricing and calls from the public for a potential reduction.

DSTV Ghana has consistently defended its fee structure, citing operational costs and external economic pressures as reasons for maintaining current prices.

However, growing public dissatisfaction has fueled demands for greater transparency and fairness.

Reacting to the committee’s composition, Mr. Kapito questioned the credibility of a review process that excludes the very people footing the bill for consumers.

“There is no consumer representation on this committee. Yet, we are the ones paying DSTV bills every month. It is only fair and logical that subscribers be part of this process to hear DSTV’s justifications and to engage directly with the Minister,” he stated.

Kapito emphasised that the inclusion of consumer voices is essential to achieving a balanced outcome.

Without it, he warned, the review risks being dominated by corporate and governmental interests, leaving everyday subscribers without a seat at the table.

The committee’s recommendations are expected to significantly influence the future of DSTV pricing in Ghana and determine whether government intervention is necessary to protect consumer rights.
