Korean automaker Kia is recalling more than 80,000 vehicles from the US market because wiring under the passenger seat, due to damage, could prevent the airbags and seat belts from functioning properly.

Damaged cables can also cause side airbags to deploy unintentionally, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall covers 80,255 Niro EVs, Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), and Hybrid vehicles manufactured between 2023 and 2025.

To resolve the issue, dealers will inspect, replace, and reroute wiring and install cable protectors for vehicle owners, as needed, free of charge.

Vehicle owners will receive a letter in March with detailed instructions on what they need to do to resolve the problem with their vehicle.

As a reminder, last November Hyundai and Kia recalled more than 208,000 electric vehicles due to a problem with a transistor in the charge control unit, which can be damaged and prevent the 12-volt battery from charging, which can lead to a loss of power while driving and increase the risk of an accident.
