Kethi Kilonzo Emerges Top Student in UK Exam in Kenya, Ranks 23rd Globally

Kenyan lawyer Kethi Kilonzo has been recognized as the Best Student in Advanced Taxation (ATX-UK) in Kenya after the March 2025 examinations.

Kilonzo was also ranked 23rd globally.

In a Certificate of Excellence shared on January 20, Kethi stated, “A journey of 1000 miles begins with one step.”

The Advanced Taxation (ATX-UK) exam is designed to equip candidates with the skills to advise both individuals and businesses on how major UK taxes affect their financial decisions.

It focuses on the practical application of tax rules to client scenarios and the preparation of clear, useful guidance.

Before taking the exam, candidates complete the Ethics and Professional Skills module (EPSM).

The ATX exam is a three-hour and 15-minute test consisting of two sections, where all questions are compulsory.

Section A includes a single 50-mark question, made up of 40 technical marks and 10 professional skills marks.

Section B has two questions, each worth 25 marks, comprising 20 technical marks and five professional skills marks.

A total of 20 professional skills marks is available in the exam, assessed in the areas of analysis and evaluation, commercial acumen, communication, and scepticism.

90,707 candidates were registered for the March sitting, during which 102,076 exams were completed. Only, a total of 3,877 students completed their final exams to become ACCA affiliates.

Who is Kethi Kilonzo?

Kethi Kilonzo is the daughter of the late Makueni Senator Mutula Kilonzo Senior and a lawyer by profession.

She is a Senior Partner and Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, and a Lecturer at Daystar University.

In addition, the lawyer is a Student Member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (UK), a Member of the Committee of Legal Education (Law Society of Kenya), and a Member of the Business Development Committee (Chartered Institute of Arbitrators).

Kethi Kilonzo has extensive experience in capital market regulations and litigation, criminal and civil litigation, commercial law, sports litigation, arbitration, taxation law, debt collection, conveyancing, and legal drafting, including Bills, opinions, critiques of legislation, and public policies.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws and an LL.M from the University of Nairobi, a Diploma in Legal Practice in 2001, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb).

In 2013, she attempted to enter politics by contesting for the Makueni Senator position, but her ambitions were cut short when the election tribunal ruled her ineligible for any electoral office.

She gained national attention the same year during the Supreme Court hearing of the presidential petition filed by opposition leader Raila Odinga, challenging the election of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
