The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has dismissed reports of a mass grave in Kericho, clarifying that the site contains unclaimed bodies relocated from Nyamira.

In a press briefing on Monday, March 23, 2026, DCI Director Amin Mohamed stated that preliminary findings show no evidence of foul play or criminal involvement. He noted that the matter had gained undue traction on social media, where false claims linked the discovery to a mosque.

The Director explained that investigators traced the remains to the Nyamira District Referral Hospital, from where they were moved to a private religious cemetery in Kericho. While court orders reportedly authorized the transfer, detectives have begun a probe into how those documents were obtained to ensure all legal procedures were followed.

“We were able to establish that these were bodies transferred from Nyamira District Referral Hospital to a private cemetery in Kericho belonging to a religious organization, and that there were court orders authorizing the transfer. However, we are interrogating the process through which those court orders were obtained,” Amin clarified.

The DCI further confirmed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident as the Homicide Directorate continues to scrutinize the burial process. Mohamed sought to calm public apprehension by making the nature of the discovery clear.

“We are not dealing with mass graves. We are dealing with the transfer of bodies.”

The DCI has confirmed that the bodies were moved from a referral hospital to a private religious cemetery in Kericho under the authority of court orders.

Detectives are now scrutinizing exactly how those orders were obtained as questions emerge regarding potential procedural irregularities. This shift in the investigation began on March 22, 2026, after reports of a suspected mass grave at Makubirini Cemetery in Kericho East prompted a probe into the transfer of 13 unclaimed bodies from Nyamira County.

The Homicide Directorate has taken charge of the case, dispatching officers to Nyamira to interrogate everyone involved in handling and transporting the remains. Those questioned include public health officials, drivers, security escorts, and the cemetery caretaker. At least five witnesses have already recorded statements as investigators work to reconstruct the timeline of the burials.

DCI Director Amin Mohamed also confirmed the arrest of two persons of interest, noting that the court granted a 30-day custodial order to keep them in custody while inquiries continue.

“As we are talking today, we were able to arrest two suspects who are persons of interest to us, and we obtained a 30-day custodial sentence to enable us to progress the investigations,” he said. “Similarly, we obtained court orders for purposes of exhumation, which we intend to commence tomorrow.”

A major point of concern for investigators involves a discrepancy in the paperwork. Detectives recovered a photocopied court order from the cemetery caretaker’s home that authorized the burial of only seven unclaimed bodies, yet 13 were interred at the site.

While the DCI maintains that no evidence of foul play exists currently, they intend to verify all original documents to explain the additional burials and ensure the entire process followed the law.
