Kaaba Receives New Kiswa for the Islamic Year 1448 AH

The Holy Kaaba has been draped in its new Kiswa with the beginning of the Islamic year 1448 AH, marking a longstanding annual tradition that reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to serving the Two Holy Mosques and preserving one of Islam’s most revered symbols.

The new Kiswa was produced at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Holy Kaaba Kiswa, where 150 Saudi artisans and specialists worked over an 11-month period to complete one of the most intricate and distinguished handcrafted works in the Islamic world.

The annual project highlights the expertise of Saudi craftsmen and the continued dedication to maintaining this important religious and cultural heritage.

1,410 Kilograms of Silk and 30 Quranic Verses Embroidered in Gold

The new Kiswa consists of 47 pieces of natural black silk and weighs approximately 1,410 kilograms.

It features 30 Quranic verses embroidered with silver threads coated in 24-karat gold, combining the beauty of Islamic calligraphy with exceptional craftsmanship.

The Kiswa remains one of the most remarkable examples of Islamic art, blending traditional techniques with modern production methods to ensure the highest standards of quality and precision.

Seven Specialized Stages of Production

The manufacturing process involves seven key stages, beginning with water purification and raw silk washing, followed by dyeing, weaving, printing, embroidery, assembly, and final quality inspections.

Each stage is carefully monitored to ensure the quality of materials and the accuracy of every detail before the Kiswa is prepared for installation.

Specialists oversee the entire production cycle, from the preparation of threads to the final assembly and inspection procedures.

Carefully Managed Transportation and Installation

Once completed, the Kiswa is transported to the Grand Mosque using a specially designed trailer that protects the covering during transit.

The replacement process is carried out according to a highly organized technical plan that ensures the safe and precise installation of the new covering.

The annual ceremony reflects the Kingdom’s continued care for the Two Holy Mosques while showcasing the expertise of national talents entrusted with preserving this enduring Islamic tradition.
