Jasmine Strong Joins Tyler Perry & Devon Franklin Film ‘R&B’

Netflix’s highly anticipated faith-based drama R&B, produced by Tyler Perry and DeVon Franklin, has locked in its final cast addition. Jasmine Strong is set to portray Shay, a vocalist stepping in as Ruth’s replacement. Shay attempts to recreate Ruth’s performance on a pivotal track — but her efforts leave producers unimpressed, setting the stage for tension and transformation in the film’s narrative.

From writers Michael Elliot (Brown Sugar) and Cory Tynan (Play’d), R&B is a modern-day retelling of the biblical story of Ruth and Boaz. Set in Tennessee, the film follows a young woman who leaves behind the Atlanta music scene to care for an elderly widowed woman. Along the way, she not only finds the love of her life but also gains the maternal bond she has always longed for.

The star-studded cast includes Serayah (Empire), Tyler Lepley (Harlem), Phylicia Rashad (The Gilded Age), Walnette Santiago (Doom Patrol), Nijah Brenea (Kold x Windy), James Lee Thomas (One Spoon of Chocolate), music legends Kenneth ‘Babyface’ Edmonds and Jermaine Dupri (Genius: Aretha), as well as Grammy-winning rapper Lecrae Moore.

Directing duties will be handled by Alanna Brown (Trees of Peace), bringing her nuanced storytelling to a film that blends faith, love, and music.

With Jasmine Strong joining the ensemble, R&B promises not only a fresh take on a timeless love story but also a celebration of music, legacy, and second chances.
