Japan taps rare earth-rich mud from deep-sea floor to cut reliance on China

Japan retrieved sediment containing rare earth minerals from a depth of 6,000 metres during a test mission aimed at reducing reliance on China, the government said on Monday. Officials said the world-first operation would be analysed to determine mineral content, calling it a significant step for economic security and maritime development.
