In a surprising political development, a Japanese political party has announced plans to replace its leader with artificial intelligence following the resignation of founder Shinji Ishimaru.

The Path to Rebirth Party, which Ishimaru launched in January after serving as mayor of a small city in western Japan, revealed the move after a series of electoral defeats.

Speaking on behalf of the party, Koki Okumura, a doctoral student in AI research and assistant to the new leader, said:

“The new leader will be AI.”

Okumura explained that while the AI will not dictate the political activities of party members, it will be responsible for internal decisions such as the distribution of resources among members. He recently won a party contest to succeed Ishimaru.

The Path to Rebirth Party gained attention after Ishimaru unexpectedly came second in the 2024 Tokyo gubernatorial election thanks to a strong online campaign. However, the party has since struggled to win seats. In the June Tokyo assembly election, all 42 of its candidates lost, and its 10 upper house candidates in July also failed to secure positions.

The announcement follows a growing global trend of AI integration into politics. Recently, Albania became the first country to appoint an AI minister, unveiling Diella, an AI-generated bot designed to oversee public tenders and reduce corruption.

While details about Japan’s planned AI leader — including its design and launch date — remain unclear, the move has already attracted significant domestic and international attention.
