style essentials

There’s something about this time of year that makes us want to take stock of our lives. And if you’re anything like me, there’s no better place to start than your closet. A new-year wardrobe refresh looks different for everyone, but regardless of where you’re starting, the goal is usually the same: to look more stylish in the year ahead. And since none of us magically gain extra hours in the day, we want to achieve that style with as effortlessly as possible.

Though I get paid to report on the latest trends, I’ll be the first to admit that keeping up can feel overwhelming at times. That’s why I (and just about every fashion girl I know) rely on a handful of tried-and-true pieces we come back to season after season. Think a standout bag or a statement shoe—the kinds of items that instantly make you look more pulled together than you might actually feel.

After doing a mental wardrobe audit, I realized just how much my personal style—and my clients’—relies on a few key closet heroes. These are the six pieces I recommend again and again to achieve that effortless, chic style. They do the heavy lifting, so you don’t have to.

1. Everyday Jewelry

As someone who spends a lot of time online, questions about my wrist stack are among the most frequent I receive. I’ve long believed in the power of accessories, but it wasn’t until last year that bangles became a non-negotiable part of my everyday uniform. It may sound dramatic, but a simple stack of bangles quietly transformed the way I get dressed.

Worn with a white tee or layered over a chunky knit, they add instant intention to even the simplest looks—polished without feeling precious, and impactful without requiring much thought. Of course, practicality matters. While bracelets are notoriously difficult to fasten solo, brands like Jenny Bird have reimagined the category. Their Gia and Ola bangles feature a sleek hinged style that slips on in seconds, making them ideal for everyday wear and an effortless way to elevate any outfit.

2. Classic White Tees

I’m not exaggerating when I say I have an entire drawer devoted to white tees. In an era when finding the right top can feel surprisingly difficult, the classic white tee remains the ultimate chameleon. Perpetually in style, it works just as well on its own as it does as a foundational layering piece.

That said, while trying to style a white tee is effortless, finding the perfect one rarely is. Fit, fabric, and longevity matter. After years of trial and error, I’ve landed on a short list I continue to repurchase season after season. If you’re not sure where to start, these are the ones I always come back to.

3. Go-To Denim

Denim, though universally loved, looks different on everyone. Lately, it’s less about owning the trendiest pair (though I do have a soft spot for barrel-leg styles) and more about wearing the silhouettes that make you feel most confident.

With the denim market more saturated than ever and nearly every cut having its moment, narrowing in on what truly works for you matters most. For me, that means slim-fit and straight-leg styles—reliable, timeless, and endlessly wearable.

4. Statement Bags

It may sound trivial, but as someone who’s deeply accessories-obsessed, I’m convinced the right bag makes all the difference. More than once, a near-perfect outfit has fallen apart the moment I’ve reached for an old, worn-in leather crossbody—prompting a brief internal debate over changing entirely or simply going bag-free (I’ll take the latter).

When adding a new bag to your collection, it’s tempting to default to something ultra-versatile in a neutral shade. But if you want your accessories to work harder, this is where a little personality goes a long way. Finishing an all-black outfit with a leopard-print bag instead of a black one instantly creates the feeling of a new look—effectively adding another go-to outfit to your rotation without changing anything else.

5. Oversized Blazers

If I had to choose a desert-island closet staple, it would be an oversized black blazer—practical survival tactics aside. For years, my thrifted, three-sizes-too-big version has rescued me from countless last-minute “I have nothing to wear” moments.

Worn over an easy black dress or paired with a white tee and jeans, an oversized blazer delivers effortless, cool-girl polish with very little thought required. It’s the kind of piece that instantly pulls a look together and never feels out of step with the moment. I happened to find my perfect one years ago, and because the style is largely timeless, I’ve never felt the need to replace it. But if I were shopping today, these would be my top contenders.

6. Fun Shoes

For someone with a strict budget, it might be surprising that a disproportionate amount of my clothing allowance goes toward shoes. Whether that can be traced back to early-2000s pop culture or the fact that I’ve been accessories-obsessed since I learned to walk, I’ll let you decide.

But here’s the point: Shoes have the power to change everything. Picture your usual tee-and-jeans uniform—now imagine it with a wrist stack, a red bag, and a pair of tiger-print shoes. Exactly. The outfit does the same work, but the result feels entirely different.
