Ikpeba criticises Ndidi for error in Super Eagles’ playoff defeat to DR Congo

Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has criticised Wilfred Ndidi for the mistake that led to DR Congo’s equaliser in the Super Eagles’ 4-3 penalty shootout defeat in the 2026 World Cup qualifying playoff final on Sunday.

Nigeria had taken an early lead in the first half when Frank Onyeka’s shot was deflected into the net. However, DR Congo drew level through Mechak Elia, capitalising on a defensive error from Ndidi. 

The match eventually ended 1-1 after 120 minutes before the Leopards prevailed on penalties, with Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi all missing their spot-kicks.

Ikpeba, speaking after the match, said Ndidi’s poor decision-making gifted DR Congo the opportunity to score.

“Wilfred Ndidi was actually the one that laid it on the platter for Mechak Elia. And that’s the thing we are talking about. That’s why some people criticize him most of the time, for probably being slow on decision making.

“Maybe anything could have happened. So if someone like Benjamin Freddy was there, maybe he would have controlled that ball very well for himself and maybe made the clearance and all of that. These things happen in football.”

With the victory, DR Congo secured Africa’s ticket to the intercontinental playoffs scheduled for March 2026.

The Super Eagles, meanwhile, will look to bounce back and restore national pride when the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off in Morocco.
