The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has expressed deep concern over unethical practices within the Nigeria Police Force, including the unwarranted transfer of ongoing cases and the misuse of police authority in civil disputes. In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the IGP outlined measures to ensure transparency, professionalism, and accountability in police operations.

The IGP highlighted several unethical practices that undermine the integrity of the Force, including:

  1. Indiscriminate Transfer of Cases: Unauthorized transfers of ongoing investigations from one jurisdiction to another without proper justification.
  2. Misuse of Police Authority: Involvement in civil matters, particularly land disputes, where no criminal elements are present.
  3. False Petitions: Filing of frivolous or malicious petitions to harass individuals or settle personal scores.

To address these issues, the IGP issued the following directives:

  • Strict Disciplinary Actions: Officers found transferring cases without authorization will face severe disciplinary measures.
  • Limited Involvement in Civil Matters: Police officers are barred from intervening in civil disputes unless there is clear evidence of criminal activity.
  • Mandatory Petition Declaration: Petitions must be authenticated and verified before any action is taken.
  • Sanctions for False Petitions: Individuals found filing false petitions will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The IGP urged members of the public to channel their complaints directly to the relevant police units rather than approaching the IGP’s office for minor issues. He emphasized that the Force is committed to delivering justice and upholding professionalism in all its operations.

“The Nigeria Police Force is dedicated to serving the public with integrity and fairness. We will not tolerate any actions that undermine our mandate to protect lives and property,” the IGP stated.

IGP Egbetokun reassured Nigerians of the Force’s commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and accountability. He vowed to enforce strict consequences for any officer or individual found misusing police authority or engaging in unethical practices.

“We are determined to restore public trust in the Nigeria Police Force. Our officers must adhere to the highest ethical standards, and we will not hesitate to take action against those who violate these principles,” he added.
