‘I was very angry’, Messi speaks on penalty miss in Argentina’s win over Austria

Argentina captain Lionel Messi has admitted he was frustrated with himself after missing a penalty in his side’s 2-0 victory over Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The veteran forward squandered a spot-kick during Monday’s Group Stage encounter but responded in style by scoring both goals as the reigning world champions secured an important win.

Speaking after the match, Messi revealed he was angry with the way he struck the penalty but was pleased Argentina recovered to claim all three points.

“Today, there was a moment where I was very angry about the penalty because I missed it,” Messi said, according to GOAL.

“I kicked it very badly, and well, luckily, we were able to turn that situation around, take the lead, and get the three points, which is what’s important.”

The 39-year-old also highlighted the competitiveness of the tournament, insisting that no match can be taken for granted.

“Obviously, it was in our plans to get the victory. We knew it wouldn’t be easy, especially with how the World Cup is unfolding. Every game is hard; no one gives away anything.”

Messi’s brace ensured Argentina maintained their strong start to the tournament, with the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner continuing to play a decisive role in his nation’s quest for another World Cup title.
