Top rumor today: John Cena Classic details

Details surrounding The John Cena Classic have been murky from the moment it was announced by John Cena himself at Backlash. No one, including Cena himself, seems to know what the hell is going on beyond the basics, and even those could be changing.

Now, PW Insider brings word that WWE is targeting later in the year for the big debut of the new event. That was apparently discussed at a recent Town Hall meeting within the company.

This comes after Cena himself told SI that they’ve been trying to iron out the details over the past couple months and they’re getting closer to doing just that. If Insider is accurate, however, they aren’t in any hurry to be ready anytime soon.

That could also mean more changes to the concept. Based on the initial ideas bandied about, that may not be a bad thing.

Right?

The rest of the rumors

  • According to PW Insider, WWE is increasing house shows this summer as a way to experiment with new things in front of live audiences while getting younger talent more reps in front of paying fans.
  • They also say Danhausen was given a ton of credit within WWE at the Town Hall meeting recently, citing his success at turning things around following a bad debut and the fact that he is currently the number two merchandise mover.
  • Despite his appearances on Raw Monday night, WWE still has no creative plans for LA Knight. That’s per Fightful Select, who report Knight is not injured, is not in a contract dispute, and does not have any heat backstage. It seems possible he’s still lost in the shuffle after Gunther was moved to SmackDown to feud with Cody Rhodes rather than stay on Raw for a teased program with Knight.
  • There are many talent within AEW pushing for the company to try to sign Leon Slater once his deal with TNA expires, even if it was once considered a formality he would be going to WWE proper, claims Self Made Pro. There is no deal in place for the latter but there could be an “arms race” of sorts once he becomes available.
  • From Fightful: Damon Kemp and Carlito were backstage at recent ROH tapings.
