“I Was Told He Took Ill After Being Informed of Maame Tiwaa’s Death Over the Weekend” – Manager Nana Poku Ashis

Manager of the late gospel music legend, Yaw Sarpong, Nana Poku Ashis, has opened up on how he received news of the musician’s death and the circumstances surrounding his final moments.

Speaking in a phone interview with blogger Sammy Kay on Monday, January 20, 2026, Ashis disclosed that he was informed of Yaw Sarpong’s passing by the musician’s second child, Kwame Sarpong, in the early hours of the morning.

According to Ashis, when he sought to find out what had happened, he was told that Yaw Sarpong took ill after he was informed about the death of his longtime singing partner, Maame Tiwaa, who passed away in December 2025.

Ashis revealed that the Asomafo Band founder was subsequently sent to the hospital for treatment. He said Yaw Sarpong later showed signs of improvement and was getting better, only for him to sadly pass away in the early hours of Monday, January 20, 2026.

Addressing rumours about the relationship between Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwaa, Nana Poku Ashis firmly dismissed claims that the two were romantically involved or married. He described their bond as a “beautiful friendship,” explaining that their closeness was rooted in years of working together in gospel music and ministry.

“They cared for each other and liked each other very much because of the work they did together,” Ashis noted, adding that the mutual respect between them was evident throughout their partnership.

He further paid tribute to Yaw Sarpong, describing him as a blessing to the gospel music fraternity and to the nation as a whole, citing his discipline, humility, and dedication to mentoring young gospel musicians. He added that, of all the artists he has managed, Yaw Sarpong was the one who had been a true blessing and an inspiration to him.

Yaw Sarpong’s death was earlier confirmed by Ashis in a separate report published by MyJoyOnline.com, following widespread reports on social media triggered by a Facebook post from renowned journalist Kofi Adomah Nwanwanii.

The legendary songwriter and founder of the Asomafo Band was widely respected for his immense contribution to Ghana’s gospel music industry, having mentored several musicians over the years.

His passing comes barely one month after the death of Maame Tiwaa, deepening the grief within the gospel  music community. Since the announcement of his death, social media has been flooded with tributes from fans, musicians, and industry players celebrating his enduring legacy.
