South Africa head coach Hugo Broos has named a robust preliminary squad ahead of their back-to-back 2026 FIFA World Cup Group C qualifiers against Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations champions will face Zimbabwe at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Friday, October 10 by 3pm before hosting Rwanda at Mbombela Stadium four days later at 6pm.

Wins in both fixtures would secure South Africa’s place at next year’s global tournament, even if FIFA imposes a three-point deduction and a 3-0 loss following an investigation into the eligibility of Teboho Mokoena, who was fielded against Lesotho in March.

Broos is leaving nothing to chance in his bid to guide South Africa to the World Cup, which would mark his final campaign as coach.

The preliminary squad features the backbone of the 23 players who recently defeated Lesotho and drew with Nigeria in Bloemfontein, with notable returns including Sphephelo Sithole, who last featured during Bafana’s third-place finish at the recent Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Bafana Bafana lead Group C with 17 points, closely trailed by Benin Republic on 14 points. Nigeria’s Super Eagles sit third with 11 points, having secured just two wins from eight matches.
