How to Trim Your Pubic Hair

The Fastest, Safest and Most Effective Manscaping Methods

How to Trim Your Pubic Hair

When it comes to personal grooming and hygiene, it’s easy to get a sharp haircut or invest in the latest deodorant or cologne. But many men, surprisingly, focus only on skin and haircare from the waist up, leaving their nether regions to become rainforest-levels of unkempt and unruly — a potential turn-off for any potential significant other.

While we’re not here to knock the au naturel look, especially if you’ve found something that works for you, many dudes are simply intimidated or ignorant when it comes to maintaining or eliminating pubes.

If you’re looking to trim or bare it all, it’s important to approach the hair down there with the knowledge to avoid ingrowns, razor burn, and any associated redness and itching.

Brittany Hartsock, licensed esthetician and owner of Waxing Aesthetics by Brittany, is a certified pubic hair expert. After 10-plus years of experience, training and education, she’s got the perfect tips for any guy looking to clean things up safely and effectively.

Here are the answers to your most common pube-trimming questions.

What Is the Best Pubic Hair Removal Method?

“It’s always up to the individual,” says Hartsock. “Men’s hair grows differently depending on genetics, race, and hormones.”

But there are two methods that guarantee hair will grow back “thinner, less itchy, and at a slower pace”: waxing or laser removal.

“Waxing removes the entire hair from the follicle,” says Hartsock. ”And the surface stays very smooth for a long period of time.”

The treatment will, of course, yield bare skin, but you can use waxing sessions to shape or clean up the areas surrounding your genitals instead of complete removal. “Plus there will be less cuts and irritation, the hair will be groomed for longer, and the individual won't have the stress of worrying about shaving,” she adds.

When it comes to laser treatment, the more expensive and permanent option, you can bank on requiring “a few sessions to see the results,” but the procedure will “stunt the hair growth for years.” This could be an ideal route for those who know exactly which areas they’d like to treat.

If you want a low-cost option, at least for the pubic region above your genitals and below your stomach, you can try a hair removal cream — just be careful not to apply any of the cream to your testicles!

How to Trim Pubes with a Razor

Oil up, gents. It’s imperative that if you take a straight razor to your pubic region, you need to moisturize the skin that supports it.

“Oils help saturate the skin and soften the hair, making it easier for the blade to remove the hair and glide on the skin,” says Hartsock. “Massage the area and always trim beforehand — it makes things much easier to see.”

While there are plenty of oils on the market to choose from, Hartsock is a fan of anything that is completely natural.

“Almond oil is a great natural oil, but do not use coconut oil — it’s not good for skin absorption,” she stresses. “It should also go without saying, but you should avoid going in with just water. Using a cream-based shaving cream over a foam is also best because you’ll be able to see things much easier and avoid missing areas.”

How to Trim Pubes with an Electric Razor

Trimming your pubic hair with an electric razor is one of the safest options. You are in complete control of the hair length and style, though it will require a certain level of maintenance and upkeep as hair continues to grow back.

Hartsock recommends using an ear or nose blade to really define the area with precision, but says the trimmer itself is the most important investment you’ll make — “you really want a good, high-quality one.”

“And some aftercare spray, cream, or toner,” she adds, with her specific recommendations at the end of this article.

How to Trim Your Balls

Whether you’re using a blade or an electric razor, trimming the hair on your balls can be quite the complicated task. But there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure the process is seamless and, frankly, nick-free.

First you should always hold the skin taut.

“Never just go at it with one finger,” adds Hartsock. “Use your entire hand to stretch the area until it is smooth. And if you can sit down for extra stability, even better.”

Next, “pull up on the skin while shaving in the opposite direction of the hair growth.” This will ensure that the hair is removed quickly without having to go back over it and irritating the skin.

And lastly, if you’re not using a natural oil, be sure to use a shaving cream over a foam. You’ll be able to see the canvas better, especially when the skin is released and folds back down.

Manscaped Electric Razors and Aftercare Products

“Their razors are great and they use aloe and witch hazel in their skincare products. For the latter, you’ll want to kill the bacteria on your skin so you don’t get irritations post-shave or trim.”
