Google Pixel

Google is one of the most generous brands and has promises seven years of Android and security upgrades for every flagship Pixel series since the Pixel 8’s launch back in 2023. That even includes the budget-friendly Pixel 8a too.

That means its current flagship Pixel 11 series, which launched with Android 17, should see Android 24.

However do keep in mind that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 were both promised just five years of OS upgrades. That means Android 17 will be the Pixel 6’s final major upgrade, as Google will be withdrawing support for the series from next year.

Samsung Galaxy

Much like Google Pixel, Samsung promises its flagship Galaxy S-series and Galaxy Z-series will see up to seven years of upgrades. That means handsets like the Galaxy S26, S26 Plus and S26 Ultra will benefit from Android 23 while the newer foldable line-up (Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8 Ultra) will see Android 24 – as they launched with Android 17 whereas the S26 series launched with Android 16.

Flagships aside, you can generally expect Samsung to offer around four years of Android updates from when the handset first launched. However, there are some outliers including the Galaxy A17 promised six years of updates.

Honor

Honor has pledged that its premium smartphones will see up to seven years of Android updates, matching Google and Samsung’s promises. That means the Honor Magic 8 Pro, which launched back in January running Android 16, will be supported until Android 23.

Honor didn’t used to be this generous, and only introduced the seven year promise with last year’s Honor Magic 7 Pro. Prior to this, Honor’s flagships were only guaranteed to see up to four years of major OS updates. So, if you’re sporting the two-year-old Honor Magic 6 Pro, then you’ll only be supported up to Android 18.

Motorola and Nothing

Motorola differs on its software promise depending on the handset itself. So, while the Razr 70 Ultra is promised up to three years of OS upgrades, the Razr Fold will see up to a whopping seven years. Sitting between the two is the Edge 70 Plus, which is promised up to five years of upgrades instead.

Since its launch of the first Nothing Phone 1, the brand has promised every handset will see three years of Android and six years of security patches. This means the current flagship Nothing Phone 4a Pro and Phone 4a, which launched with Android 16, will see Android 19.

OnePlus, Oppo and Realme

OnePlus, Oppo and especially Realme aren’t quite as generous as others, though OnePlus and Oppo have recently increased their upgrade promise. So, while the OnePlus 15 promises to see up to four years of Android OS updates, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra will see up to five years. In addition, both handsets are promised to see six years of security patches too.

However, it’s worth noting that some of Oppo’s more affordable models are only promised a measly one to two years of upgrades, which is pretty disappointing.

Speaking of measly promises, Realme is especially tight with its software updates. Devices launched prior to 2025 will only see two major OS updates and three years of security patches, while newer handsets are promised a minimum of three OS upgrades.

Xiaomi and Poco

Xiaomi differs in its update policy depending on the handset. While you can generally expect just two years of Android updates for Xiaomi phones, the Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra promise up to four years of OS and six years of security patches.

Poco, whose parent company is Xiaomi, doesn’t offer a firm or conclusive commitment on its software update policy. However, we have noted that you can generally expect a minimum of three years of Android updates. In fact, the Poco F9 Ultra will see up to four years of OS updates and six years of security patches.

Other brands

Vivo

Things get slightly complicated when it comes to Vivo, as the brand divides its handsets into different groups to receive either regular, monthly or quarterly security updates. At the time of writing, Vivo offers at least two years of Android updates.

TCL

TCL’s update offering depends on the handset itself. As its website explains, while TCL typically offers at least two years of updates, it “may support the security updates for three years or longer for some models.”

Frankly, we would advise against hoping for anything too far above the minimum updates for a TCL handset.

HMD

HMD promises up to three years of Android years. Considering the HMD Fusion is a seriously budget-friendly phone, with an RRP of under £300, it’s perhaps understandable why the promise is so low. However, we’d still much prefer to see a higher claim.

Asus

Disappointingly, Asus offers among the fewest Android upgrades for its smartphones, with just two promised OS updates. This promise is especially shocking when you consider that the latest Asus Zenfone 12 Ultra has an eye-watering RRP of €1099 yet will only be supported up to Android 17.

Huawei

Before we start, it’s worth keeping in mind that Huawei uses two operating systems on its phone, depending on the location, HarmonyOS in China or EMUI skin globally. Regardless of the OS system used, Huawei doesn’t explicitly state how many Android updates users should expect their handsets to receive.

We’re usually reluctant to recommend a Huawei handset as the lack of Google services means it offers a more limited experience for Android users.

How to check how many updates are left on your phone

Firstly as it’ll vary depending on your manufacturer and specific handset, you’ll need to check your individual phone’s specs to see how many updates are left. We’d also advise that you make sure your OS is up to date, and you can do this by following our guide on how to check your software on Android guide.

It’s simple, and requires you to simply enter your phone’s Settings app and look for its software version.

FAQs

How many years of updates is normal for Android in 2026?

There’s no one-size-fits-all policy when it comes to software updates for Android phones. While some flagships promise up to seven years of updates, which is the most we’ve seen, other promises drop down to around five or even as low as two years of updates instead.

If you’re buying a new phone then we’d strongly recommend choosing one with a higher amount of upgrades, as this will help your money go further.

Which Android phone gets the longest software support?

At the time of writing, the Pixel 11 and Z Fold 8 series will see Android 24, making it the longest software support.

What happens when my phone stops getting updates?

Although your phone will continue to work as usual, and be able to make and receive calls and texts, it will lose out on new features and become more susceptible to malware and viruses.

Over time, you’ll also notice apps will start glitching and eventually become incompatible with the OS too.
