How Govt Will Ensure 24-Hour Security at Nairobi’s Green Park Pedestrian Underpass

The government has assured Nairobi dwellers of security at the Green Park Terminus Pedestrian Underpass, located at the Haile Selassie – Uhuru Highway Roundabout.

Speaking during an inspection of the project, the Principal Secretary for the State Department of Roads on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Joseph Mbugua said the underpass will feature 24-hour police patrols alongside retail outlets, ensuring both security and convenience for commuters.

Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) acting Director General, Luka Kimeli added that the underpass will be equipped with all necessary safety measures and monitoring systems to ensure that pedestrians can move safely at any hour.

“The underpass is unique as it will house 24-hour shops and police presence to address any security challenges,” Luka Kimeli noted.

PS Mbugua confirmed that construction is progressing on schedule. He said the underpass would not only ease congestion but also cut down pedestrian–vehicle conflicts, which remain a major cause of accidents in the area.

“Over 21,000 pedestrians use the Haile Selassie – Uhuru Highway Roundabout daily,” Mbugua said.

Once complete, the Green Park Terminus Pedestrian Underpass is expected to transform daily commuting for thousands of residents, providing a safer, more organised, and secure passage under one of Nairobi’s busiest roads.

The integration of police presence and retail facilities is a first-of-its-kind approach, combining traffic management with urban convenience, and is likely to serve as a model for similar infrastructure projects in the country.
