It’s no secret that preppy style has ruled our wardrobes this year—from our beloved sporty-chic dresses and tees over the summer, to the ever-enduring coastal grandmother aesthetic. But as the weather cools, a new preppy persona has been slowly taking the reins for fall fashion: equestrian style.

Yes, you read that right. Your adolescent horse-girl era is cool again. Equestrian fashion has been quietly taking over my Pinterest and local retail stores as of late, and it’s giving major main character energy. The trend is full of polished details, refined tailoring, and old-school flourishes that feel like a sophisticated sister to our beloved grandma-core—if she entertained horseback riding. The trend leans on pieces like fall riding boots, blazers, and jodhpurs (AKA riding pants). But it also leaves plenty of room for playing with your own takes (the best part).

Brands like Anthropologie have already jumped on defining the trend, with a new equestrian collection that’s full of fall outfit ideas. To get more of the low-down on the trend, and how to best achieve the look, we spoke with the senior designer for Anthropologie’s Maeve, Mekenna Hartweg. And don’t worry, there’s no need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe of equestrian fall outfits—Mekenna notes that this trend is playfully versatile and very adaptable.

How to try the equestrian trend

“Even a single equestrian-inspired piece can refresh your wardrobe and instantly feel relevant for the season,” says Mekenna. “If you’re wearing a riding-inspired piece, like a boot, pair it with something effortless and everyday, such as relaxed denim or a cozy knit.” She also add that contrast is key to making the look feel chic. “That contrast keeps the look grounded and prevents it from feeling too literal.”

Taking advice from Mekenna, our team was eager to build our own equestrian playbook for fall. So, if you’re looking for some inspo to achieve the look, we’re pulling together ten signature pieces to keep you trendy from the barn to the office. Read on for our full equestrian style rundown—plus where to shop. Giddy-up!

Must-have equestrian fashion pieces

Barn Jackets

The barn jacket has officially trotted out of the English countryside and into our everyday wardrobes. What once was reserved for rainy walks through the fields is now a street-style staple spotted on everyone all of your favorite Instagram it-girls. Whether you go classic or opt for something more modern, this versatile piece layers seamlessly over everything from chunky knits to slip dresses.

Trench Coats

The trench coat is the ultimate fall chameleon. Chances are, you already have one in your closet, but this season, the equestrian fall fashion trend can breathe new life into it. Add subtle touches like a silk scarf knotted at your neck, and suddenly, your trench feels less “office commute” and more “weekend riding lesson.” I’ve been eyeing the Sézane’s Clyde Coat for a minute now and think I’m finally adding it to cart. It’s a timeless classic with just the right amount of polish.

Blazers

Blazers are the MVP of fall layering, and they happen to be the backbone of the equestrian chic style. You can easily style a blazer for any occasion this season, whether its tailored trousers for the office, jeans and loafers for errands, or a mini dress and some equestrian boots for dinner. A structured blazer just pulls everything together so effortlessly, and instantly gives you that refined, polished look.

If equestrian chic is cozy and polished, then chunky sweaters are your ultimate wardrobe choice. Think thick cable-knits, roomy turtlenecks, and oversized silhouettes that will keep you warm from October through February. Brands like Quince and Aritzia are delivering some of the dreamiest knits for fall—perfect for layering under barn jackets or slinging over your shoulders for that off-duty rider energy.

Wear these leather boots with a sweater dress, tuck in straight-leg denim, or go full equestrian with a blazer and pleated mini. Suede Pieces

Few fabrics scream fall like suede. In the equestrian world, it’s tied to saddles and boots, but this season, we’re seeing it in cropped jackets, shoulder bags, and mini skirts. Suede adds the perfect amount of texture to any outfit.

Pleated Mini Skirts

The pleated mini skirt is straddling the line between prep school and equestrian chic, and we’re not mad about it. Pair it with an oversized blazer and riding boots for a look that’s part Gossip Girl, part countryside. It’s playful yet polished, and the ideal piece to keep on rotation all season long.

Preppy Details

Sometimes all you need is that one detail to nail a trend—and equestrian accessories are the easiest entry point. A skinny belt, printed hair scarf, or thematic bag gives just the right nod to equestrian chic without feeling overdone. Add one of these fall fashion accessories to an otherwise simple outfit and you’re instantly in on the trend.
