He Lost Everything When I Left Him

About 3–4 years ago, my mom opened a shop. I helped her with sales. That was when I met Kay. His father’s shop was close to ours. I saw him all the time. Sometimes, I would do everything to steal glances at him. By the time I acknowledged I had a crush on him, I found out he had a girlfriend.

Their love was enviable. They were always all over each other in public. I won’t lie, I was jealous. I wished I was the one he loved so passionately. I was still happy for him though. I told myself that I was happy someone made him happy.

For a whole year, I stood on the sidelines and watched them live in a world I could only fantasise about. I got relief when I left for school. I did my best to embrace my new life and the new people I had met. I tried to forget about him but I couldn’t fully put him out of my mind.

By the time I returned, I realised they were no longer talking. When I asked my mum about them, she told me that they broke up because they were not spiritually compatible. I didn’t understand what it meant but I was a little happy.

One day, while scrolling through my mom’s phone, I found Kay’s number. I texted him and told him how I felt. He admitted he also had feelings for me but he didn’t approach me because of his ex and my mum.

As we talked more about ourselves and our feelings, we started dating. At the time, he didn’t have a single kobo. He was a graduate, but unemployed, working in his dad’s shop. I didn’t mind. I loved him and that was what mattered to me.

Strangely, soon after we began dating, he landed a huge contract. With my advice and support, he got an apartment, and furnished it. When it was done, he took me there to show me what he had done with the place. That day I prayed for him and we celebrated his success.

Although our relationship was a secret, I was happy with him.

A week later, two companies he had applied to called him to start work. They offered him a seven-figure salary. I was overjoyed and proud of him.

Things seemed to be going well, until one day when he invited me over. As soon as I got there, something felt off. I noticed signs that other women had been around. There was even a lady’s kit in his bathroom.

When I confronted him, he lied and said it belonged to his sister. I refused to let him touch me that day. He got angry, treated me like trash, and sent me away like I was nothing. I left in tears.

Later, when I went back to school, he started threatening to show my mum the pictures of the private moments we shared if I didn’t take him back. I was shocked and scared at first, but then I stood my ground. I told him, “Do your worst. If you like, publish it online. I don’t care!”

After that, I blocked him and moved on.

During the holidays, he contacted me again with a strange number, begging for forgiveness. I blocked that too. Not long after, I saw him at my mom’s shop. He looked unkempt and broken. I almost felt pity for him.

He called me and told me everything he went through after I left. He said he was sacked for something he didn’t do, and was even imprisoned for six months.

“I went to a certain church and the pastor told me I have to apologise to the person I offended for my life to move forward.”

Maybe he believes that person is me. I have forgiven him but I’ve made up my mind: I’m never taking him back. I’ve moved on. I wish him well too.
