He Left Me When He Was Still Owing Me GHC45

We had a fight the night before and I’d gone to apologize. It wasn’t my fault the fight happened but if I didn’t make an attempt for peace, the issue would drag on forever.

I got to the front of his door and saw him sitting on the floor with his legs spread wide and eating some watery food from a very big bowl. I drew closer and realized he was eating Gari soakings.

There’s a way you eat Gari soakings to make it appear rich: a little bit of peanut, a lot of milk to make it creamy and if you were like me, you would break biscuits into pieces and put them in the mixture. This wasn’t the type of soakings he was eating. He didn’t even take his time to pour out the floating little nuisance on top of the soakings.

The food looked wretched. Just the Gari and sugar and plenty of water to make it more watery than it deserved. I jovially said, “How can a man like you eat something like this? Would those in war-torn countries even eat this food? Or have you missed your boarding school days in SHS?”

It was a joke ooo. I said it with a broad grin just to break the ice for a conversation to start. He quickly got up, held my shoulders and threw me out of his room, all the while shouting, “Get out! Get out! Are you the one to tell me what to eat? Do you feed me? Am I your son for you to tell me what to eat?”

I left his compound without looking back, thinking he was in a bad mood and would calm down later so we could talk. That same night he texted, “If you don’t understand my now, how would you understand my future? I can’t live with a woman who doesn’t understand the times. You’re appalled because I’m eating soakings? Go to where they serve pizza and continental food. I’m done with you.”

As I write this, he’s owing me GHC45. It was GHC700 but he paid it sɔpi sɔpi until it’s left with GHC45. I’m the one he borrows from when times are hard but today he’s telling me I don’t understand the times. I should have left long ago but my stupid heart wouldn’t let me, now look at me, just because of soakings I’ve been driven out like a thief of little things.
