'Have a day off!' M&S updates milk products but some shoppers aren't convinced

Supermarkets are constantly bringing out new products to cater to shopper demands or test out new ideas.

New high-protein milk has been spotted in Marks & Spencer Foodhalls which has prompted customers to share their opinions.

Its description reads: "Our British High Protein Skimmed Milk is a great option if you're trying to up your daily protein."

It is available for £1.60 for one litre and contains 15 grams of protein per 250ml serving.

This is considerably more protein than the M&S Select Farms British Skimmed Milk, which has around nine grams per 250ml serving.

The retailer has released many protein products in recent months to help Britons hit their health and fitness goals, but not all shoppers are sure about this.

Posting about the new milk on Facebook, one customer said, "protein has taken over plant-based as the new marketing ploy".

Another agreed saying "stick protein on a label and it's instantly appealing, in this day and age especially".

One more said, "all milk has protein in it, have a day off". However, another defended the new product saying normal milk does "not have a lot of protein" in comparison.

Another shopper added: "This is considerably higher protein than normal milk so I'm not sure why everyone hates the idea of it so much. More protein, decent price - what's the problem?"

A third shopper agreed and said they "might give it a try" and one more said it was an "amazing" price for the product.

Protein helps the body repair and build muscle. It keeps the body feeling fuller and can increase the metabolism, so it is often praised as a weight loss tool.

M&S head of nutrition Sophia Linn stated: "Protein is an essential macronutrient that our body needs for energy, growth and repair.

"Protein is made up of building blocks called amino acids. Some essential amino acids cannot be made by the body, and therefore need to be consumed in food.

"Protein helps our muscles repair and recover after exercise. Choosing a meal rich in protein after exercising, like a beef stir-fry with plenty of veggies and noodles or a salmon and veg tray bake, aids recovery and can help reduce the risk of injury."
