Ghana suffers 2-0 loss to Mexico ahead of World Cup

Mexico national football team defeated Ghana national football team 2-0 in an international friendly match played in Puebla. Ghana struggled defensively, while Mexico controlled most of the game and deserved the victory.

Mexico scored very early in the match, taking the lead after just two minutes. A mistake in Ghana’s defence allowed Brian Gutierrez to calmly score past goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

The home side dominated possession during the first half and created more chances, going into halftime with a 1-0 advantage.

Ghana improved after the break and looked more dangerous in attack. Felix Afena-Gyan tested the Mexican goalkeeper with a strong shot in the 51st minute, while Jesurun Rak-Sakyi nearly scored with a long-range effort that hit the crossbar.

However, Mexico quickly extended their lead in the 54th minute when Guillermo Martínez scored the second goal to seal the win.

Mexico enjoyed 59 percent possession and registered eight shots on target, compared to Ghana’s three. Benjamin Asare made six important saves to prevent a heavier defeat. Mexico also had more corner kicks, winning nine compared to Ghana’s three.

The Black Stars were managed by assistant coach Desmond Offei because head coach Carlos Queiroz was absent due to personal reasons.

The friendly match is part of Ghana’s preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Black Stars will next face Wales national football team in another friendly on Tuesday, June 2, at Cardiff City Stadium as they continue preparing for the tournament.
