Nigeria, Sweden Reaffirm Commitment to Deeper Ties

By Emmanuel Kwada

Nigeria and Sweden have strengthened their bilateral relationship through a recent high-level meeting focused on trade, innovation, and regional cooperation.

The discussions took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Abuja between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Sweden’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm. Both sides expressed strong commitment to expanding collaboration in key areas for mutual benefit.

Ambassador Westerholm, who presented her credentials in 2025 and took up her post in August that year, praised the hospitality she has received in Nigeria.

She emphasized Sweden’s support for Nigeria’s green and digital transitions, highlighting technology and innovation as key to growing economic links between the two countries.

The talks covered trade and investment opportunities, including digital infrastructure, sustainable energy solutions, and the creative economy.

Special attention was given to Nigeria’s dynamic music sector, particularly Afrobeats, with Sweden expressing interest in partnerships that merge its production and technological strengths with Nigeria’s creative talents.

Ambassador Westerholm referenced the Swedish Trade Office in Lagos, established in 2025 by Business Sweden, as a clear sign of Sweden’s increasing commercial focus on Nigeria and a base for facilitating more investments and business ties.

On regional matters, the meeting addressed security and governance issues in ECOWAS and the Sahel. Minister Tuggar underscored Nigeria’s central role in fostering stability and economic integration in West Africa, while encouraging stronger private sector engagement to achieve common objectives.

Both diplomats agreed to continue regular consultations, with a forthcoming visit by a Swedish State Secretary planned to keep the momentum going.

This engagement builds on more than 60 years of diplomatic relations now marking 65 years in 2026 and aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to diversify international partnerships and Sweden’s priorities in sustainable development across Africa.

It signals promising growth in areas like digital innovation, green energy, and cultural exchanges.

The renewed focus is seen as a step toward more practical and impactful cooperation between the two nations.
