Professor Okey Ikechukwu, a specialist in Strategic Management and Human Capital Development, has argued that Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara holds a strategic advantage over FCT Minister Nyesom Wike due to his previous role as Accountant General, which gave him intimate knowledge of the state’s financial operations.

Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, Professor Ikechukwu highlighted the governor’s control over substantial monthly statutory allocations. “Today, the resources going to Rivers State through the budget available to Fubara are statutory. They come in every month in quite a quantum of billions. So on the power of patronage, he has a massive advantage because it’s not his own resources or resources from elsewhere,” he said.

The professor noted that Fubara’s physical presence in the state provides additional political leverage. He noted that the governor maintains direct connections with constituents, giving him superior understanding of the political terrain. “He was Chief Accountant for the state. He knows where all the bones are buried. He knows those that can be resurrected if there’s need. He’s a native doctor in that terrain, and a soothsayer as well,” Professor Ikechukwu stated.

According to the professor, Wike’s influence now depends entirely on financial resources, which he no longer controls at the state level. This shift allows Fubara to attract former Wike supporters through patronage, as political loyalty in the state has historically followed financial support.

Professor Ikechukwu noted that whoever currently controls the purse strings can successfully recruit supporters from opposing camps.
