The 2024 MTN mPulse Spelling Bee Grand Finale was a moment of triumph and transformation for Ikenna Ikechukwu, a student at Glorious Covenant School, Rivers State, who emerged as this year’s champion. In an inspiring conversation, Ikenna shared his journey of determination, preparation, and the emotional crescendo of winning his first-ever national title.

During the conversation, Ikenna enthusiastically shared details about his journey, from state competitions to his first national competition. When asked what motivated him to participate, Ikenna’s response was heartfelt. “A lot of things actually inspired me—my coach, for one, who has always been supportive, and my previous experiences in spelling competitions. Watching others compete and realizing the wealth of knowledge they showcased motivated me to keep learning. So, when I saw the announcement for the MTN mPulse Spelling Bee, I knew I had to give it a try.”

Speaking about the preparation process, Ikenna didn’t mince words about how demanding and tasking it was. He said, “Preparing for the competition meant sleepless nights. There were so many words to learn, and while it’s impossible to know them all, I aimed to master at least 60-70% of them,” he admitted. His preparation also required sacrifices, including skipping some classes and dedicating himself fully to his spelling practice. “It’s all about focus and prioritising your goals,” he added.

Reflecting on the moment he was announced as the winner, Ikenna described a whirlwind of emotions. “Honestly, I had so many feelings at once—excitement, disbelief, and even tears. This is my first national win. I’ve won at state levels before, but to win on a stage like this was overwhelming. I was just so, so happy,” he said, his voice still tinged with the joy of the moment.

As Ikenna prepares to step into the role of MTN CEO for a Day—a unique prize that accompanies his ₦5 million scholarship, laptop, and smartphone—he hopes to inspire other young Nigerians to embrace opportunities like the Spelling Bee. “This platform doesn’t just reward winners; it gives you the confidence to aim higher and believe in your abilities,” he shared.

Ikenna was quick to express his thanks. “I am incredibly grateful to God for this moment and for guiding me through all the rounds to become the winner. I also thank my parents, my coach, and my school for their unwavering support. A special thanks to MTN for this amazing platform that helps students learn, play, and shine.
