FRC, NESLAI Hold SME Financial Awareness Campaign in Kano

The Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), in collaboration with the New Era for Sustainable Leadership and Accountability Initiative (NESLAI), has organised a Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Financial Awareness Campaign in Kano aimed at strengthening financial discipline and accountability among entrepreneurs.

The campaign, held on Thursday, April 16, 2026, brought together entrepreneurs, regulators, industry leaders and government officials to discuss the importance of sound financial management practices for the growth and sustainability of SMEs across Nigeria.

Participants at the event examined the critical role of proper record-keeping, financial transparency and regulatory compliance in improving the credibility and performance of small and medium-scale businesses, which remain a major driver of economic activity and job creation in the country.

Speaking at the event on behalf of the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the FRC, Rabiu Olowo, the Director of Accounting Standards (Private Sector), Musa Jemaku Kabiru, reiterated the Council’s commitment to empowering SMEs with the knowledge required to strengthen their financial systems.

According to him, financial discipline should not be seen as a burden by entrepreneurs but as a strategic tool for business growth and sustainability.

“Financial discipline is not a burden but a strategic advantage. It enables businesses to access loans, make informed decisions and achieve long-term sustainability,” he said.

Kabiru noted that SMEs with structured financial records and transparent reporting practices are better positioned to attract investment, secure credit facilities and compete effectively in both domestic and international markets.

He emphasised that the Council would continue to work with stakeholders and development partners to promote financial literacy and compliance with established reporting standards among SMEs.

The FRC also reaffirmed its commitment to its statutory mandate of promoting transparency, accountability and adherence to global financial reporting standards as part of broader efforts to build a stronger and more resilient Nigerian economy.
