FG to Deploy 25 New Ambassadors, Warns Against Unauthorized Use of Diplomatic Titles

The Federal Government has concluded plans to deploy a new batch of 25 ambassadors to strategic diplomatic missions across the globe as part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s international engagement and advance its economic and security interests.

The development was disclosed on Friday in Abuja by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kiemebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, who said the nominees comprise a blend of seasoned career diplomats and political appointees.

According to Ebienfa, the nominees have successfully undergone the required screening processes and are now being strategically assigned to countries considered critical to Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and security priorities.

He explained that the initiative forms part of the Federal Government’s broader effort to reposition Nigeria’s diplomatic missions for improved efficiency and global relevance.

“These ambassadors are expected to project Nigeria’s interests abroad, attract foreign investments, strengthen bilateral relations, and deepen cooperation with host countries,” Ebienfa stated.

He added that the appointments reflect the administration’s commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of Nigeria’s foreign policy architecture and ensuring that diplomatic missions contribute more directly to national development objectives.

However, the government also raised concerns over what it described as the growing proliferation of individuals falsely adopting ambassadorial titles within the country.

In a strongly worded advisory, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned individuals, organisations, and groups against the illegal use of titles such as “Peace Ambassador,” “Youth Ambassador,” and similar designations that are not officially recognised by the Federal Government.

The ministry stressed that under international diplomatic protocols, only individuals formally nominated by the government, cleared through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and duly accredited to host countries are legally entitled to bear the title of ambassador.

Ebienfa noted that the misuse of such titles undermines the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic system and could pose risks to national security and the country’s credibility in the international community.

“The use of unauthorized ambassadorial titles can create confusion and may be exploited for personal gain, social influence, or other questionable activities both within and outside Nigeria,” he said.

The warning comes amid increasing reports of individuals allegedly parading themselves as ambassadors without official recognition, often using such titles to gain undue advantage in business, social, and political engagements.

Consequently, the Federal Government has directed relevant security and regulatory agencies to monitor the situation closely and take necessary action against offenders.

The ministry emphasised that anyone found guilty of falsely claiming ambassadorial status or engaging in diplomatic misrepresentation would face appropriate legal consequences.

Citizens were also advised to exercise caution and verify the authenticity of individuals claiming ambassadorial status, while reporting suspicious cases to the appropriate authorities.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of Nigeria’s diplomatic institutions and ensuring that the country’s representatives abroad operate strictly within established international diplomatic standards.
