FG Moves to Secure Compensation for Nigerians Returning from South Africa

The Federal Government has directed Nigerians returning from South Africa to properly document businesses, vehicles, properties, and other assets they left behind amid rising anti-immigration tensions in the country.

The move is aimed at facilitating compensation claims for citizens who lost or were forced to abandon their investments under the ongoing voluntary evacuation programme.

The development comes in the wake of nationwide anti-immigration protests across South Africa, which have heightened concerns over possible xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians.

Sources indicated that affected returnees are being encouraged to provide detailed records and evidence of their assets to strengthen the government’s engagement with South African authorities on compensation and restitution.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to South Africa has commenced diplomatic consultations with relevant South African officials to seek redress and adequate compensation for investments and properties owned by Nigerians affected by the unrest.

The Federal Government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests and welfare of its citizens abroad, assuring that all lawful avenues would be explored to ensure justice and support for those impacted by the crisis.
