Ex-Eagles player warns Nwabali against overconfidence

Former Nigeria international Sam Sodje has warned that Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is becoming overconfident and needs to be checked.

Speaking on No Holds Barred with Ifeanyi Udeze on Brila FM, Sodje backed head coach Eric Chelle’s reported decision to consider alternative goalkeeping options ahead of next month’s FIFA World Cup playoffs.

According to the former Super Eagles defender, Nwabali’s behaviour has gone beyond confidence and could negatively impact team dynamics.

“There’s a difference between being confident and having a bad attitude,” Sodje said. “He acts like someone who cannot handle fame and success. He has to calm down.”

Sodje added that Nwabali’s attitude could lead to costly mistakes if not addressed early.

“If the coach feels Stanley could cost us the game, then he has to act now. The team needs a psychologist to help him refocus,” he said.

“He just came into the team and had a few good games—fair enough—but others have been doing this for a long time. Someone needs to speak to him before things get out of hand.”

Sodje concluded that discipline and composure are crucial as Nigeria prepares for the crucial World Cup playoff fixtures next month.
