Europe Watches Warily as Putin Advances Russia’s Superjet Aircraft

President Vladimir Putin’s push to advance Russia’s aviation capabilities has gained momentum as the PD-8 engine enters certification flights on the Superjet.

The new turbofan has already logged over 4,700 test hours, including long-distance flights of up to 6,000 kilometres, demonstrating stable operation, reliability, and readiness for commercial deployment.

“The tests were successful. We have confirmed reliability,’ one of the super jet tester said.

The certification process for the PD-8 includes rigorous trials designed to ensure safe and reliable operation in all foreseeable conditions.

Tests conducted so far have included water ingestion simulations, bird strike scenarios, and high-stress fan blade failure assessments, all of which are critical elements for commercial aircraft certification.

PD-8 Fan Blade Containment Tests

A key component of the PD-8 testing programme involved controlled fan blade release experiments.

According to Russian testers, an explosive device was installed on a specially prepared fan blade and triggered while the engine was operating at high thrust, simulating take-off conditions.

“The task of this test is to prove that in the event of such a situation during flight, there will be no damage to the glider, i.e., it won’t hit the fuselage.”

Video footage of the tests shows the controlled release of the blade, with all containment measures performing as intended.

Engineers confirmed that the fan blade retention system functioned reliably, meeting one of the main points of the engine’s certification requirements.

“One of the main points of the certification basis: fan blade retention parts.”

The completion of these tests represents a significant step forward in the certification process, bringing the PD-8 closer to obtaining its type certificate.

Officials described the milestone as a “serious enough step” in ensuring the engine meets international aviation safety standards.

Long-Distance and Reliability Trials

Beyond extreme failure scenarios, the PD-8 has also undergone extensive long-distance flights to assess endurance and operational stability.

With a range of up to 6,000 kilometres, the engine has consistently demonstrated reliable performance, confirming its suitability for commercial use on the Superjet platform.

“The test is completed…we are another step closer to obtaining a type certificate for the engine.”
