Türkiye’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority has raised household electricity and natural gas prices by up to 25% from April 4, citing rising global and domestic energy costs linked in part to supply chain pressures in the Strait of Hormuz.

ANKARA: Energy bills across Türkiye have jumped sharply after the country’s Energy Market Regulatory Authority raised household electricity and natural gas prices by up to 25%, with the new rates taking effect nationwide from April 4. The regulator cited sustained upward pressure on production and distribution costs within the energy market as the primary driver of the increases.

Under the new pricing structure, household electricity prices have risen by 25%, while household natural gas prices have increased by an average of 25%. For other subscriber categories, power prices for public and private service sector subscribers connected at low voltage will increase by 17.5%, industrial subscribers connected at medium voltage by 5.8%, and agricultural users by 24.8%.

Under the new rates, a household consuming 100 kilowatt-hours of electricity will pay $7.26, according to the regulator. The adjustments reflect the mounting cost pressures facing energy producers and distributors across the country.

Energy authorities attributed the increases in part to a surge in global energy benchmarks driven by supply chain concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, the critical waterway through which a significant share of the world’s oil and fuel flows. Disruptions to navigation in the strait have contributed to rising energy costs across the region and beyond.

The price hikes add to the financial pressures facing Turkish households and businesses already navigating a challenging economic environment, and are likely to feed through into broader inflationary pressures in the months ahead.
