Emirates launched a US$5.1 billion Dubai South engineering project set to become the world’s most advanced aviation maintenance facility.

DUBAI: Emirates has officially broken ground on its massive US$5.1 billion engineering complex at Dubai South, a landmark aviation project expected to become the world’s most advanced aircraft maintenance and overhaul facility.

The new Emirates engineering project will cover more than 1.1 million square metres, making it one of the world’s largest aviation engineering facilities and the biggest steel structure in the GCC. The development forms part of Dubai’s wider ambition to strengthen its position as a global aviation and logistics hub.

Dubai South has rapidly become one of the UAE’s most important aviation and infrastructure zones due to its strategic connection with Al Maktoum International Airport, which is expected to become the world’s largest airport once fully completed. The area is also central to Dubai’s long-term D33 economic agenda focused on trade, aviation and future industries.

The Emirates engineering project will feature the world’s largest free-span aircraft hangar, capable of simultaneously servicing 28 wide-body aircraft, alongside specialised paint hangars, logistics centres and advanced repair workshops. The facility will also include training centres, office space and one of the world’s largest dedicated landing gear workshops.

The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Emirates Airline President Sir Tim Clark and senior officials from Dubai South and China Railway Construction Corporation, which is leading the project construction.

Sheikh Ahmed said the Emirates engineering project supports Dubai’s future-focused aviation ambitions while expanding Emirates Engineering’s operational capabilities and specialist services under one integrated complex.

The facility is expected to set new sustainability standards, with plans for LEED Platinum certification and large-scale solar energy integration across the site.

Construction is scheduled for completion by mid-2030, with the complex initially supporting heavy aircraft maintenance operations for Emirates’ growing global fleet.
