Google Chrome Now Automatically Turns Off Annoying Website Notifications

Google is rolling out a new feature for Chrome on Android and desktop that automatically turns off notifications from websites you ignore. The update builds on Chrome’s existing Safety Check tool, which already monitors permissions like camera and location access.

The new auto-revocation feature helps users cut down on notification spam from websites that send frequent alerts but rarely get engagement. According to Google, less than one percent of all Chrome notifications actually receive clicks — making most of them more distracting than useful.

In an announcement, Google said,

“Our tests show a significant reduction in notification overload with only a minimal change in total notification clicks.”

Interestingly, sites that send fewer notifications are actually seeing an increase in engagement, suggesting that cutting down on spammy alerts improves user experience.

How It Works

The feature identifies websites that frequently send ignored notifications and automatically revokes their permission. However, it does not affect installed web apps or notifications from sites users regularly interact with.

Chrome users who prefer to manage permissions manually can turn off the auto-revocation feature entirely. They can also restore notifications for specific sites by revisiting the website or re-enabling permissions via Chrome’s Safety Check settings.This update continues Google’s effort to make Chrome a more secure and user-friendly browser. While there’s no official rollout date yet, the company has confirmed that the feature will be available soon for all users.
