Hugo Ekitike is expected to miss the upcoming World Cup after suffering a suspected Achilles injury during Liverpool FC’s UEFA Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

The 23-year-old France forward was stretchered off at Anfield, with the club fearing a lengthy spell on the sidelines that could also rule him out of the start of next season.

Ekitike underwent scans on Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury, with results expected to confirm the extent of the damage.

Having joined Liverpool from Eintracht Frankfurt last July, Ekitike has been one of the club’s standout performers this season, registering 17 goals and six assists across all competitions.

Reacting after the match, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot admitted the situation looked serious.

“I think we could all see that it didn’t look well and didn’t look good. Let’s wait and see what it will be. But we could all see it didn’t look good,” he said.

“In the second half, he went home so I haven’t seen him yet. Losing a game is already very hard, especially in the way we lost it, but losing a player is something we’ve had so many times this season.

“It’s especially very hard for him because you never want to be injured, especially not at this moment of time in the season.”

Earlier this year, Ekitike became only the second player after Kenny Dalglish to score in five different competitions during his debut campaign with Liverpool.

He made his senior debut for France in September and was expected to be included in Didier Deschamps’s squad for the World Cup.

Liverpool have endured a series of injury setbacks this season, with Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley ruled out for the remainder of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Alisson Becker and Wataru Endo remain sidelined, although Alexander Isak recently returned from an ankle injury sustained in December.
