Eight arrested for illegal mining in Ashanti Region’s Pakyi No. 1

Police in the Ashanti Region have arrested eight men suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities at Pakyi Kaniago in the Atwima District.

The arrests were made during a two-hour operation led by the Asokwa Divisional Police along the banks of Rivers Nwere, Abufunu, and Akai on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

According to police, the suspects were caught using chanfan machines and other equipment to mine illegally. Eight motorbikes, several water pumping machines, and one excavator were retrieved from the scene.

Authorities say the mining has severely damaged the local environment, including farmlands and water bodies.

Community members reported that more than ten acres of cocoa farms have been destroyed. The rivers, once used for drinking and farming, have also been polluted, threatening the livelihoods of residents.

DCOP Rev. Nyamekye Adani Ameyaw, the Asokwa Divisional Police Commander, confirmed the arrests and stated that the case has been forwarded to the Ashanti Regional Police Command.

Charge sheets have been prepared, and the suspects are expected to appear in court soon.

While some residents feared speaking out, others criticised traditional leaders for not taking action.

Many have called on the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene and help protect the area from further destruction.

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
