“EFCC Arrests 20 Suspects For Vote Buying During FCT Elections, Recovers N17.2 Million” — One Suspect Caught With N13.5 Million In Car Beside Polling Station

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the arrest of 20 suspects for sundry electoral offences, including alleged vote buying and vote selling, during Saturday’s Area Council elections held across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement posted on its X handle on Sunday, the anti-graft agency said operatives also recovered more than N17 million from some of the suspects.

According to the statement, one of the suspects was apprehended with a staggering sum of N13,500,000 (Thirteen Million, Five Hundred Thousand Naira) in a car parked beside a polling booth in the Kwali Local Government Area.

The EFCC provided a breakdown of arrests across the territory:

• Gwagwalada: 9 suspects
• Kwali: 4 suspects
• Kuje: 4 suspects
• Abaji: 2 suspects

The total amount involved in the electoral offences stood at N17,218,700.

The EFCC confirmed that the suspects would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations.

“The arrests, carried out on Saturday, involved offences ranging from vote buying and selling to obstruction of election officers,” the statement read.

The FCT council polls recorded low voter turnout and drew allegations of electoral malpractice from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), whose candidates lost across several areas of the territory.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) secured a dominant victory in the elections by winning five out of six chairmanship positions. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won only in Gwagwalada Area Council.

The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of the FCT local government elections, reflecting the commission’s commitment to ensuring transparency and integrity in the electoral process.
