Dubai launches ViruGenetics Lab to strengthen food safety monitoring

ViruGenetics Lab launched by Dubai Municipality will detect foodborne viruses using advanced genomic testing technologies and faster analysis systems.

DUBAI: Dubai Municipality has launched the ViruGenetics Lab, a specialised facility dedicated to detecting foodborne viruses through advanced genomic testing technologies at Dubai Central Laboratory.

The ViruGenetics Lab is the first facility of its kind in the UAE and reflects Dubai Municipality’s continued efforts to strengthen food safety standards, protect public health and support innovation in laboratory services across the emirate.

Officials said the laboratory can process around 60 samples daily, with capacity increasing to 100 samples during emergencies. The system is designed to provide faster testing results, helping authorities accelerate inspections and improve data-driven decision-making based on highly accurate findings.

The ViruGenetics Lab uses digital PCR technology, widely recognised as one of the most advanced molecular analysis methods available globally. The technology enables highly sensitive quantitative and qualitative detection of viral pathogens, including norovirus and hepatitis A and E viruses.

Dubai Municipality explained that the laboratory is capable of analysing complex food samples such as seafood, dairy products, juices and fresh produce while maintaining accuracy even when analytical inhibitors are present. All procedures are conducted according to ISO/IEC 17025 standards to ensure quality, reliability and efficiency.

Eng. Hind Mahmoud Ahmed, Director of the Dubai Central Laboratory Department at Dubai Municipality, said the launch supports Dubai’s wider strategy to establish specialised laboratories equipped with cutting-edge international technologies. She added that the initiative reinforces Dubai’s ambition to remain a global leader in food safety and public health oversight.

The ViruGenetics Lab will also support collaboration with universities and research centres to develop a national database for foodborne viruses and strengthen scientific research in the field. Authorities said the initiative will improve proactive health monitoring by providing precise genetic data linked to food supply chains.

The launch further strengthens Dubai’s growing reputation for adopting advanced technologies to enhance public safety, healthcare standards and sustainable urban development.
