Over 1,000 individuals have been left without homes after a severe rainstorm hit Iyara community, which serves as the headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area in Kogi State.

The incident took place during the night of Monday, causing widespread damage.

Following the disaster, Oba Jacob Meduten, the Eleta Oluyara of Iyara, made a plea to the government, affluent individuals, and organizations to assist the affected individuals in alleviating their plight.

On a different note, the Kogi State Government is urging the residents to take necessary precautions with the imminent arrival of the rainy season.

Mouktar Atimah, the Executive Secretary of the State Emergency Management Agency, confirmed the unfortunate event in Iyara, stating, “Upon receiving information about a natural disaster in Iyara, our team was promptly dispatched for an immediate assessment.

“The chairman of the local government also reached out to us, and we are working together to mitigate the suffering of those affected individuals.

“Residents residing in low-lying areas are advised to relocate to higher ground. It is crucial for Kogites to be vigilant when it comes to the roofing of their homes, as poor roofing can make buildings vulnerable to strong winds.”
