Detectives Recover Murdered UoN Student’s Belongings in Suspect’s Home Raid

Detectives in Kiambu County have made a major breakthrough in a gruesome murder case, recovering personal belongings of murdered university student Jane Atila Quedeya during a raid at the residence of her suspected murderer in Kikuyu.

The second-year University of Nairobi student went missing on October 13, 2025, prompting a frantic search that turned tragic four days later when police found her decomposed body in Kefri Forest.

Suspect Allegedly Confesses to Luring Victim

Following the horrific discovery, detectives launched a swift and detailed investigation which led them to Nicholas Mutia Mutia, who is believed to have been Jane’s former boyfriend. The suspect was arrested in Kikuyu following a multi-agency operation informed by intelligence.

The police revealed that Mutia allegedly confessed during interrogation to having lured Jane into the forest after they got into an argument the night before she was murdered. He then led detectives to the exact location where the police found her body.

During a thorough search of his residence, officers recovered multiple items believed to belong to the victim, including a black shoelace, rubber shoes, a white handkerchief, black-and-white undergarments, a black-and-grey hooded backpack, yellow manila rope, an elastic band, a pink bedsheet, and various other personal belongings.

21-Day Detention Granted as Investigation Deepens

The suspect was presented before Kikuyu Law Courts on October 25, 2025, where detectives were granted permission to detain him for 21 days pending investigations. The court scheduled November 13, 2025, as the date to mention the case.

Investigators have uncovered disturbing additional allegations linking the suspect to other violent crimes. Two women have provided statements claiming Mutia abducted them in the same forest where Jane’s body was discovered. Both of the women told police that the suspect robbed from, tortured, and sexually assaulted them. Detectives are looking into possible connections between these cases.

Family Reveals Ransom Demand Before Murder

Jane’s family has come forward with shocking information about alleged communication with Mutia on the night she vanished. According to relatives, the suspect allegedly called demanding KSh2,500 and threatened to harm Jane if they failed to send the money.

Jane’s brother reportedly managed to send KSh1,000 but could not manage to get the remaining amount. Shortly thereafter, the family received news of her killing.

Detectives are working to establish whether the murder was connected to the ransom request and if there were any other people involved in the killing.

Rising Murder Rates Alarm Authorities

The suspect remains in custody as investigations proceed. Authorities have expressed growing concern over escalating murder cases nationwide, with police statistics revealing that up to eight such incidents occur daily across Kenya.
