Day 6 — Flesh vs Spirit

Focus Scripture:

“If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.”
— John 15:10

What You Will Walk Away With:

  • Obedience is both the evidence of spiritual fruit and the condition for bearing more.
  • True obedience flows from abiding in Christ, not from striving in the flesh.
  • The Spirit empowers us to obey God gladly and wholeheartedly.

Opening Reflection

Is obedience part of the fruit of the Spirit? While obedience is not listed among the nine qualities in Galatians 5, it is inseparable from a fruitful life. Jesus said, “If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love.”

Obedience is both the result of abiding in Christ and the path to greater fruitfulness. As we obey, we remain in His love. As we remain in His love, we bear more fruit. This is the cycle of spiritual growth.

Core Meditation

Many believers struggle with obedience because they view it as a burden. They see God’s commands as restrictions, not as pathways to life. But true obedience is not a burden; it is a response of love. It flows from a heart that has experienced the grace of God.

The fruit of the Spirit grows in the soil of obedience. When we obey God’s Word, we position ourselves to receive more of His life. When we resist His commands, we hinder our growth. Obedience is not about earning His love; it is about abiding in it.

The Holy Spirit empowers us to obey. We do not have to obey in our own strength. The same Spirit who produces fruit in us also gives us the desire and ability to follow God’s commands. As we yield to Him, obedience becomes natural rather than forced.

Jesus is our perfect example of obedience. He said, “I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.” He obeyed perfectly, even to the point of death on a cross. His obedience secured our salvation, and His Spirit enables our obedience.

Obedience also involves our will. God does not force us to obey; He invites us to choose. Every day we face decisions: will we follow God’s Word or our own desires? Will we trust His wisdom or our own understanding? The choice is ours, but the power is His.

As we obey, we discover that God’s commands are not burdensome. They are the loving guidance of a Father who knows what is best for His children. His ways lead to life, peace, and true freedom.

Christ-Centered Conclusion

Obedience is not a duty to perform but a relationship to enjoy. It flows from love, not fear. It is the natural response of a heart that has been transformed by grace.

As you abide in Christ, you will bear the fruit of obedience. As you obey, you will abide more fully in His love. This is the cycle of spiritual growth—abiding, obeying, bearing fruit, and abiding more.

Obey Him today. Trust His wisdom. Follow His Word. And as you do, you will discover the joy of a fruitful life.
