Day 37: All in as Light in the Darkness

Bible reading for 40.Day 2025 | Isaiah 60:1

I long to obey Jesus’ Great Commission, to bring His love and Gospel to the darkest and most desperate places in the world.

Light of the world

In 2022, when the Russia-Ukraine war broke out, God miraculously opened the door for me to go to Ukraine. The scenes in the war zone broke my heart – homes destroyed by bombs, elderly people living in chicken coops, disabled people crawling through ruins, and the air was filled with the stench of death. Many mothers, having lost their husbands and homes, chose to abort their children. Millions fled, and hopelessness covered the hearts of the people.

Coming from safe, sunny Singapore with no experience of war, I was overwhelmed by the darkness. But Jesus’ words reminded me: “You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)

When we live out the true Light, darkness will retreat.

Fighting darkness with darkness only adds to the darkness. Instead, the Bible tells us to do the opposite.

“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” (Romans 12:21)

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:5)

Darkness may seem powerful, but it can never defeat the light. When we live out the true Light, darkness will retreat.

Using the ordinary

I held back my tears before God, yet a fire was lit in my heart – a desire to go and find the most broken, the most helpless, and let God’s love flow into their lives through me.

Someone there asked me, “Why did you come? Many capable people have fled. You’re a woman from a small, faraway country – what can you do?”

They weren’t wrong. I am ordinary. But God loves to use the ordinary to display His power. When we are willing to be used by Him, the world will see: It is not my ability, but His grace.

Who we are doesn’t matter. What matters is that Jesus says we are the light of the world.

God uses the ordinary to display His power. It is not my ability, but His grace.

My husband and I have an architectural background, so we helped build more than 500 homes for widows, the disabled, and orphans. We also established emergency shelters, rehabilitation centres and orphanages. Every door says, “You matter. God has not forgotten you.”

What touches me most is that more than 1,000 babies have been born safely in Ukraine because of the support we provided. They might otherwise have been lost to despair. These children are living testimonies of the “light that darkness cannot extinguish”.

Because of this mission, the local government has granted us residency, so we can continue to bring God’s light into the darkness!

That is how God has called us to serve and love others. What about you? You may not be called to Ukraine or a war zone, but there are people living in darkness everywhere, starting from your neighbourhood. Who is God calling you to bring His light to?

This year, as we celebrate Singapore’s 60th National Day, Church, let’s learn to be the blessing of Isaiah 60: “Singapore, when darkness covers the earth and deep darkness the peoples, arise, shine! For your light has come.”

Let’s pray.

Father, may we become Your glorious lighthouse as the world grows darker, shining Your light to the nations. May this city not only prosper, but become a spiritual beacon drawing nations to know You. Holy Spirit, set Your Church ablaze. Don’t let us be content with religious routines, but help us live out love and shine into every corner of society. May we truly be the salt and light of the world, bringing the culture of heaven into our workplaces, schools, families, and arts to testify of Christ. Only Jesus Christ can bring true peace to this generation. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen!

Reflect:

1. Will you obey the Great Commission given to every believer?

2. Where is God sending you to usher in His light today?

3. What gifts and talents do you possess that you will surrender to the Lord today for His use and for His glory?

Pray:

1. That we will catch the fire to obey the Great Commission given to all believers by Jesus Christ.

2. That we will bring the light of Christ into dark places, hope to the hopeless, salvation to the lost.

3. That the Church will unite and be salt and light in every mission field, from our neighbourhood to our neighbouring nations.
