Day 32: Together with Our Faithful God

Bible reading for 40.Day 2026 | Ruth 1:16

Today, I would like to look at the Book of Ruth. 

At its core, it is a story about going through life together.

Ruth was living in the days of the Judges. Those were also uncertain times. Everyone simply did what seemed right in their own eyes. It was a time of intense geopolitical uncertainty, moral ambiguity, personal losses and grief.

I was sort of heading that way too, with what is going on in the world. So, I ask the same heavy questions: 

• Are these the end of the end-times? 
• Is the geopolitical situation getting worse? 
• On a personal level: Is artificial intelligence (AI) going to make our careers and our skills irrelevant? 
• Will AI begin to do what is right in its own eyes, leaving us behind? 

Those are many possible permutations, and honestly, it can feel overwhelming. But amidst all these permutations, one truth is absolutely certain: God will be with us.

Let’s look at Ruth. She was likely only in her 20s, a young adult who tragically lost her husband. She was grieving, displaced and facing economic ruin. Yet, she never lost her sense of doing the right thing, even when it cost her everything. 

She had to make a choice, a choice that others wouldn’t have made. She chose to stay and take care of her mother-in-law, Naomi, even though she had every legal and cultural right to walk away and start over. In choosing Naomi, she was giving up every opportunity for personal progression and security.

Because of a famine, they were forced to travel to Bethlehem. To Ruth, a foreigner from Moab, Bethlehem offered absolutely nothing. Moabites were looked down upon; she was an outsider. But God was there for this Moabite woman.

What is fascinating about the Book of Ruth is that God’s name is only mentioned a couple of times. There was no dramatic theophany (visible manifestation of God). There was no burning bush, no parting of the Red Sea, and no audible, personal conversation with God.

But here is the thing: God was quietly present in every single decision made by Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz. It was as though God was behind the scenes, weaving a beautiful tapestry of redemption and provision through simple, ordinary people. When Boaz showed kindness to Ruth, it wasn’t just luck, it was God’s hand moving.

So today, I want to tell you: God wants to weave redemption and provision into your lives as well. As you watch this, God is weaving your story.

Never lose hope in God, young people. I know there are many “Ruths” out there today – young men and women who feel surrounded by uncertainty, deep fears, pain and setbacks. You may feel powerless and invisible. Don’t!

Ruth found favour in a place where she was a minority. She found love in the most unlikely place. 

Why? Because this powerless, ordinary person mattered to God. 

And you might feel the same way. You might ask, “Who am I in the eyes of the people I look at every day? Do I even matter?”

You matter. God wants you to have a Ruth-based life, not just a rule-based life.

In the eyes of God, you are somebody important. He cares about you deeply, and He wants to make a “Ruth” out of you – someone of character, loyalty, and faith.

Your current season is not the end of your story. Don’t despise or hate your life, and don’t be afraid of where you will end up. God is invisible, but an ever-present God.

In Ruth 1:16, she makes her declaration to Naomi: “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.”

She made a choice that not many would have made. That was her apex moment. That was the turning point in her life.

Ruth had no idea that her small choices mattered. But she became the great-grandmother of King David, and through that very lineage came Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world. 

God saw her loyalty, her faithfulness, and her love – and God met her there.

Today, you too need to make a choice: To trust God for your future. To believe that He is who he says He is: Your God, your Saviour, your Redeemer. He is faithful to you. Be faithful to him.

As we enter our time of prayer today during this 40.Day season, let’s pray for that same spirit of faithfulness toward God.

Let’s pray that the young people in our nation will trust the invisible hand of God to weave their future, no matter how uncertain the world looks. 

Let us pray.

Holy Spirit, we are here to listen to Your voice. Lord, I know You listen to our cries that no one else hears, You know our deepest need that no one knows, You have seen our darkest hours no one has seen. Yet God, You have never left us. Where we went, You were there. 

You are weaving our story, You are not done with us yet, Lord. There is more for us.

Like Ruth, we are facing uncertainty in a world that is changing so fast. Yet, God, we know we can hold fast to You. Lead us to our Bethlehem and we will surely see Your provision and redemption. 

In Jesus’ most precious name we pray, Amen.

Reflect:

1. Do we find ourselves affected by uncertainty in the world today?

2. Do we truly believe that God is with us even in the worst of times?

3. Will we trust God for our future, even if our present doesn’t look great?

Pray:

1. That like Ruth, we will choose to do the right thing even when it’s not the most popular thing to do.

2. That we will let God make a “Ruth” out of us – a person of character, loyalty and faith.

3. That we will trust God to weave our days and determine our future.
