Court hears N5 billion copyright lawsuit against gospel singer Sinach

The Federal High Court in Lagos will hear a N5 billion copyright infringement lawsuit filed by music producer Michael Oluwole, popularly known as Maye, against internationally acclaimed gospel artist Osinachi Egbu, widely known as Sinach, today, November 27, 2024.

This legal battle focuses on the global hit song ‘Way Maker,‘ with Maye seeking co-ownership rights and damages.

He alleges his contributions included recording, mixing, and mastering the song and creating and performing instrumental accompaniments like piano, strings, and synthesizers.

Despite his involvement, he asserts that Sinach commercialised the song without compensating him or formalising an agreement regarding his input.

The plaintiff is asking the court to declare him a co-owner of the song and award him N5 billion in damages. He also seeks an equitable share of revenue from licenses and copyright assignments, full disclosure of all agreements and earnings related to the song and a perpetual injunction against further unauthorised use.

In her defense, Sinach represented by Emeka Etiaba (SAN) of Etiaba Chambers, denies the allegations.

She asserts that she is the sole creator of Way Maker, having composed, arranged and performed it before Maye’s involvement.

Her legal team argues that Maye’s role was limited to mixing the master recording, for which he was paid, and that he holds no rights to the song’s copyright or publishing income.

Since its release, ‘Way Maker’ has achieved international acclaim, earning multiple awards, including the GMA Dove Award for Song of the Year.

It surpassed 100 million views on YouTube in 2019, has been covered by over 60 artistes, and translated into more than 50 languages.

The song was a staple in US churches in 2020 and became an anthem during the George Floyd protests in Minneapolis that same year.
