President of SSC Napoli, Aurelio De Laurentiis, has revealed that manager Antonio Conte played a key role in the club’s decision to sell Victor Osimhen to Galatasaray.

Osimhen was instrumental in Napoli’s historic 2022/23 Serie A title triumph, ending the club’s 33-year wait, and scored 26 goals to win the prestigious Paolo Rossi Award.

Despite signing a new contract in December 2023, a gentleman’s agreement had already been reached between Osimhen and De Laurentiis, allowing the striker to leave the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona before the 2024/25 season.

After failed transfer moves to Chelsea FC and Al-Ahli in the summer of 2024, the Nigerian forward was excluded from Napoli’s Serie A squad and eventually joined Galatasaray on loan.

Speaking to The Athletic, De Laurentiis admitted that allowing Osimhen to leave may have been a costly mistake.

“When we started with Conte, we received an offer of €200m from Paris Saint-Germain and others to sell Victor Osimhen and Kvara together. Mr Conte said, ‘Osimhen you can sell, but please don’t sell Kvara’.

“Big mistake. Because after, I had big trouble with Kvara’s father and agent,” he said, referring to Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
