Expressing worries over the recent academic performance of some ex-agitators benefiting from the Presidential Amnesty Programme’s tertiary education scholarships, the programme’s leadership highlighted the issue.

Inaugurated in 2009 by late Umaru Yar’Adua, the initiative aimed at persuading Niger Delta militants to surrender their weapons.

Recently, the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, Maj. Gen. Barry Ndiomu (retd), revealed that a total of 1,659 student beneficiaries have successfully graduated from offshore universities under the PAP scholarship scheme.

During a meeting with stakeholders and PAP delegates, the Head of Reintegration in the Amnesty Office, Wilfred Musa, emphasized that beneficiaries would face higher standards in the future, as communicated by a statement issued by the Administrator’s Special Assistant on Media, Freston Akpor.

Musa stressed that the programme cannot afford to waste resources on beneficiaries who fail to meet the leadership’s standards and are more inclined towards filing frivolous complaints against the PAP leadership instead of focusing on their studies.

He remarked on the poor recent examination performance of some delegates, leading to their dismissal, signaling a new approach by PAP to prioritize admission into universities while maintaining stricter standards.

The statement highlighted PAP’s commitment to supporting only those delegates who demonstrate a genuine willingness to undergo training within the Amnesty Programme, signaling an end to leniency in standards.

Encouraging stakeholders to avoid actions that could cause disunity in the Niger Delta region, the Administrator urged for unity and cooperation.

Commending the efforts of the current PAP administration, the National President of the PAP Third Phase Leaders, Elaye Slaboh, expressed optimism for the future, stating, “We are very happy with the IA. With the way and manner he is handling the Programme, if he continues like this, then the best is yet to come”.

He also urged the PAP leadership to extend support to more third-phase delegates in the Cooperative and Scholarship schemes while offering encouragement to back the administrator’s initiatives.
